Arrival in Kuala Lumpur Brunei Sandakan Langkawi Departure Kuala Lumpur To the bottom
By plane from Brunei to Sandakan in the Sabah district of Borneo
Confusing restriction signs for those who like to have a smoke after lunch
Lovely sunset view from
the hotels people deserted bar
Looking forward to next day´s adventure
we found the cab
and our driver
In the roundabout the crocodile showed the way to the crocodile farm
but we wanted to go and meet our ancestors at the Sepilok and we did not follow his directions
This rehabilitation centre was founded in 1964 and set up by Barbara Harrison from England.
It was the first centre in the world to dedicate itself to the rehabilitation of orphaned orangutangs
Hello! How are you?
It was foodtime and everybody were on their way
to the table
sharing the good things
Baby Orangutan stay with their mothers for up to six years while they are taught the skills they need to
survive in the forest, the most important of which is climbing
and to keep clean
At Sepilok a buddy system is used to replace a mother´s teaching.
A younger ape will be paired up with an older one to help them to develop the skills they need.
The feeding time was over and the apes went back to their forest
On our way to the sun bear we passed many giant trees like this one with a beautiful ornamentation
There were not many other animals to see but we could hear the
sounds of the endangered Bornean Pygmy elephants which the centre also takes care of
I think this is a spider! It moved...
We paid our entrance fee for the Sun Bear Conservation Centre which is next to the Sepilok Centre
but we were unlucky, the bears did not want to show up so the only photo is this bad one
The nice time with the orangutangs was over so we asked our driver where we could have a nice lunch
He drove us to Beer street which was the only place we could have a cold beer
and fried rice with vegetables and chili - PERFECT!
Here I found these beautiful Heliconia flowers
We ended our day on the Balin rooftop garden - best in town
A visit to the Puu Jih Shih Temple and the happy fat Buddha
counting the Buddha statues watching the temple
A visit to the Agnes Keith House which nowadays is a wellkept historic museum
and not like the Sandakan Heritage Museum
A phone you cannot carry around
I think this is not translated in a correct way (ha,ha,ha)
A quote from Agnes Newton Keiths first book "Three Came Home" - I like her way of looking on life
A quick stop to have a look of the aged and neglected Chinese cemetery with its horseshoe arched graves
A quick stop at the Buli Sim Sim Water Village. Thank you ! for the quick stop, not much to see
A visit to the Harbour Mall.
Sandakan is the crossroad of the Asian maritime trade routes
From the hotelroom we had a nice view of the Sulu Sea which is east of the South China Sea.
Sandakan was once the blooming capital of colonial British North Borneo but is now a grey, declined city.
I was glad to leave this city with its air thick humidity and dirtiness but happy to have seen our the orangutangs
The last I saw before leaving the hotelroom was this pram dumping its shit right into the sea.
