Rome Naples Palermo To the bottom
We stayed at the ancient nicely redecorated Palazzo Brunaccini in the heart of the old town.
It is the perfect place to stay at if you want to do walking tours of Palermo without using public transportation.
Immediately we started our discovery tour of Palermo!
Just around the corner of the hotel is the Ballaró market, it was early in the morning
it was raining but the graffiti on the way to the market made me happy
Ballarò market is a place where the past and the future are melted in a mix
Stands displaying fresh fish
and stands of XXL vegetables
or cheese
Preparation for the
Ricotta cheese directly on the market
We continued our discovery tour and passed the famous Fontana Pretoria, okey...
We left Palermo´s old center through the city gate Porta Felice and started to walk alongside the sea
On the Via Messina Marine we finally found the restaurant locals had told us to go to if we wanted fresh fish
From the restaurant il Cantastorie you can discern the Utveggio Castle (to the left) on the Mount Pellegrino
Flowering Coral tree and a nice blue sky with fluffy white clouds made the one hour walk it worth while
and the restaurant delivered what we wanted!
we were in heaven!
I usually do not take pictures of food but this was something special
to the food we had the local wine Judeka which perfectly matched the feast of seafood
Back in the city center, but what was this?
was it a masquerade, could we participate?
Oh no!
Jesus!
Authentic?
Teatro Politeama
The opera house Teatro Massimo is the biggest in Italy, and one of the largest of Europe
and renowned for its perfect acoustics. We tried to get tickets but without success
We went to our favourite place Maqueda Bistrot and had a bottle of La Monaca before we went to
the Palermo Cathedral
I felt small
I have nothing to confess
a happy priest
an interesting cathedral but not spectacular from the inside
Next morning we passed the cathedral again and from the outside it is spectacular
We went to the Palazzo Reale, the oldest royal residence in Europe.
Since 1974 the Regional Assembly of Sicily gathers in the beautiful Hercules Hall of the castle
The Chapel of the Palace - Palatine Chapel, by far the best example of the so-called
Arab-Norman-Byzantine style.
Inside the chapel you find a unique architecture of mosaic decorations
Close to the castle there is San Giovanni degli Eremiti which according to guide books
is notable for its brilliant red domes but according to me it must have been a while ago
but it is worth to visit anyway
Since it was raining we took a taxi to the Capuchin Catacombs at the Piazza Cappuccini 1
taking photographs inside is prohibited which we respected (but not others) so these pictures are
scanned postcards which we bought
To the left is Rosalia Lombardo a two year old girl who died in 1920 rediscovered like this in 1982
To the right Colonel Enea DiGuiliano in his French Bourbon uniform
Exhausted we went back to our nice hotel for some Scopa
Some shopping!
We left this fantastic city through the Porta Nouva. Palermo I think we will come back!
